My tour then took me South-East to Vinci, Leonardo's birthplace, where we have a beautiful villa which is a short (and pretty) walk into the town. I wanted to try it out myself and, if you choose to stay here, you'll enjoy the sweet little path, through an olive grove, on a marked route that leads to Leonardo's birthplace. It takes less than 10 minutes.
Day 6Back in Central Tuscany, I went back to Radicondoli to get some new photographs of one of our most popular properties, Ragnana (sleeps 8). The house is looking lovely and I went off to test "Il Nazionale", one of the local restaurants. Excellent Ossobuco!
"Il Nazionale" had a series of old photos of the village, you can still easily recognise where this was taken from.
Day SevenI headed south-west from Casole, past Siena and out towards Perugia and Lake Trasimeno. This is a beautiful part of the world and has some real jewels of landscape and history. One of my favourites is the pregnant madonna, by Piero della Francesca, in the tiny town of Monterchi. Its an unusual and striking subject, now housed slightly incongruously in what used to be the village school.
I was off into the hills to see a tiny hamlet that had been entirely and beautifully restored by a dynamic English woman - now you can rent the whole place for 16 or take one of the apartments. The views are spectacular, also because there is a small walled medieval village a short distance down the hill. The photo to the left is of the fortified village seen from the Borgo.
There are several parts to the Borgo: Casa Antica, the main large house in the hamlet, sleeps 8. Beneath it is La Terrazza, a spacious apartment for 4 with a large kitchen and outside eating area. Mulinetto is the old mill building, where a mill used to be turned by donkey power - now it is a charming apartment for 2. Further up the hill, close to the pool, is Casetta, a freestanding house for 2. All have fantastic views and the area is a treasure trove of walks.
Close by, on the way to Perugia, is the lovely family holiday villa of Casa del Cambio, sleeps 10. Large, spacious, in a green valley, this is the perfect spot for a relaxing Umbrian holiday. In 2018 the owner will install air-conditioning in all the upstairs bedrooms.
And that's it - I'm back in the office, taking bookings. Here are some useful links related to these properties:
Last visit before Rome airport
My last visit before leaving was to Castelonchio, a property for 6 overlooking Lake Trasimeno. This is a property that our customers go back to again and again, once they've discovered it: the views are spectacular, and the area is full of hidden delights. The owners, who live next door, are incredibly helpful and a large part of why customers keep coming back.
