Some say the Luberon is Provence at its finest and at Aigue Brune, named for the river which has carved deep ravines in the landscape, there is a taste of what 'the finest' is all about. It is about the tranquil majesty of cliff faces and the fascinating fort that once defended the villages perched upon them. It is about the charming bustle of weekly markets and then stopping at a cafe on the village square to pour over your purchases. It is about the perfume of lavender and the hum of bees whose gift will be honey for your tea. And it is about a country house, built of native fieldstone with soft green shutters to mitigate the heat of the summer sun and surrounded by trees under which truffles flourish. A house that welcomes its guests, be they family or friends, and helps them to leave the city behind, even for a while.

While the cypress-lined drive may bring you to a more formal front door, it is in the long open-plan main room facing the rear of the house where most will gather. Here picture windows and sliding glass doors allow light to pour into three free-flowing areas: a central dining area with a table for 10 and open settees, a modern kitchen with low cupboards under generous counter space, and a cosy living area where a sofa and wicker armchairs face the open fireplace. Also on the ground floor is a double / twin bedroom with an ensuite shower room, ideal for guests happy to avoid a staircase. Three bedrooms are located on the upper floor - a double/twin bedroom with an ensuite shower room and a double bedroom and twin bedroom which share a bathroom with twin basins. While the house is fashioned of thick stone walls, beamed ceilings and aged terracotta floors, the furnishings themselves are pleasingly light with a touch of whimsy. Additional accommodation is found in the pool house only 50 m. away where sliding glass doors behind the poolside terrace open to a large twin bedroom with ensuite bathroom. And because these quarters are separate from the main house, they are also equipped with a handy sink, fridge, bar and sitting room with a sofa bed.

As comfortable as the interiors are, the beauty of the surroundings will draw visitors outdoors. Perhaps to the pool to work on a tan and meditate on a mountain or to the vine-draped pergola to savour local ingredients in amiable company - or one could simply set a chair in the dappled light of sheltering branches and listen to birdsong and knowing their choice of holiday venue was somehow inspired.

Local area

The petite village of Buoux just down the road has shops, a bar and a restaurant that is worthy reward for those who climb to visit the medieval fort that once defended this mountainous region. Nearby, Lourmain and Bonnieux justly vie for the prettiest village of the Luberon; whether you prefer the many cafes and restaurants that spill out on the cobbled streets meandering around Lourmain's ancient belfry or opt for Bonnieux's bustling markets and its views of patchwork orchards and vineyards across the valley floor, the day will have been a success. For wine tasting and a satisfying sip of art and sculpture, Chateau La Coste, only 33 km away, delivers a harmonious surprise. Slightly farther, on the banks of the Rhone, is Avignon, whose 14th century Papal palace is a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by medieval stone ramparts, or Aix-en-Provence, the 'City of Fountains' and home to art schools whose students fill tree-lined boulevards and outdoor cafes. Once you've filled a day with touring, of course, the pleasure will be to return to the peace of Aigue Brune and savour its own natural beauty.
