Bifora 2

A romantic cottage in Italy with wonderful views. : Maremma, South of Siena

Nice little touches

  • The old monastery and 10th century church have a magical atmosphere - to be staying in the roof space of the medieval buildings feels particularly special

Bifora is located in Pieve di Caminino, a little hamlet in the beautiful Maremma countryside between Roccastrada and Massa Marittima, is set in a natural, verdant amphitheatre, with enormous olive groves extending down from the wooded, rocky background towards the coast.

The charming and knowledgeable owners, who speak perfect English, have continued the cultivation of the olive groves started by their forefathers, and produce some of the most delicious olive oil in Italy. Their family history has long tradition of famous painters and architects. With excellent taste and skill they have converted the little hamlet into characteristic apartments and cottages for visitors, one of which is Bifora.

As well as the panoramic views, there are over 500 ha. of woodlands to explore, and an ornamental lake has lawns furnished for sunbathing, flowerbeds and a cooling sprinkler. Within 20 minutes' drive are thermal spas and hot waterfalls. The site for the swimming pool has been carefully chosen to protect the peace and architectural integrity of the hamlet.

Accommodation

La Bifora is a simple but charming apartment set within the medieval church that is the heart of this ancient place, and is tucked against the ancient church roof, giving you access to the views from the old "Bifora" window. The roof terrace is magical, a perfect spot to enjoy a romantic drink in the evening while gazing out over the Tuscan landscape with your loved one. Around Bifora

This ancient fortified church lies in territory once fought over by the Sienese; if you visit Siena and see the famous fresco by Simone Martini, you will see Roccatederighi and Montemassi, two nearby villages, in the background - there even those who have speculated that Guidoriccio da Fogliano, the commander of the Sienese army shown in the painting, was at the Pieve in this painting.

This is an area known the Maremma, and the Pieve lies where the "Metal mountains" fold down into the plains surrounding Grosseto, and there is plenty to see here: As well as visiting famous towns such as Massa Marittima and Siena, from Caminino you can easily explore the park of the Uccellina, the Etruscan cities of Roselle and Vetulonia, Pitigliano and Sovana. The beach is half an hour away, and it is easy to visit Argentario, or you can take a boat to islands such as Giglio, Giannutri and Elba. Add the comfort and peaceful beauty of Pieve di Caminino and you have a recipe for a wonderful holiday.

On a lesser known note, there is some wonderful bouldering around SassoFortino.
