  • Accommodation

The central arched entry leads into a welcoming hall with a traditional vaulted ceiling. Two steps up through a brick-lined arch is the large living room with an open fireplace at one end and comfortable sofas in a central seating area between two wide arches. Three steps lead down to what was originally a porch extension and is now a sunny panoramic dining room with outdoor access and a table for 16. Handy to the dining room is the adjacent kitchen whose double cookers and refrigerators and industrial dishwasher make meal preparation for a large number all the easier. On the gound floor there are four double bedrooms – one with an ensuite shower room directly off the entry hall, two with adjacent or ensuite shower rooms off a short corridor near the stairway to the upper floor, and a final double bedroom three steps down from a shower room entry off the living room. Also on this floor, and with a door to the pool area, is a sitting room with satellite TV which allows guests to get away from the crowd or catch up on the news.

The upstairs landing opens to a large hall off of which are three doors – one leading directly to a double bedroom with ensuite shower room. The other two doors lead to corridors that each lead to two bedrooms, a double and a twin, In both cases the double bedrooms have ensuite shower rooms, while the twin bedrooms have adjacent shower rooms. From one of these double bedrooms there are stairs leading up to a loft with two single beds. Further accommodation is found in the former haybarn to the left of the main villa. With its entry encircled by a partial wall and an outdoor dining area shaded by a wisteria draped pergola, this is a lovely retreat for a small family unit or those preferring an extra bit of quiet. On its ground floor there is a sitting/ dining room with an open fireplace and table for four, off of which is a galley kitchen complete with washing machine and dryer, and a large double bedroom with ensuite shower room. An open staircase from the living room leads up to a second double bedroom and an ensuite bathroom with a tub and hand-held shower wand.

The haybarn is but a short stroll to the pool area behind the villa. With a sun-dappled sitting area to one side and a long covered and curtained pergola with a dining table for 16 on the other, this is a spot that will draw guests interested not only in an afternoon lap or two. From here the view is wide, green and rolling, just as a Tuscan landscape should be, and it can only renew the spirits.

    Local area

While continuing uphill will lead to the small 16th C. village of Montebenichi and a restaurant serving traditional Tuscan fare, there are many reasons to head back down to the valley. Heading north there is nearby Ambra with excellent shops and restaurants or Montevarchi from which one can catch the fast train into the heart of Florence. To the northeast is the medieval walled city of Arezzo, whose Basilica preserves the masterpiece of Piero della Francesco and whose Piazza Grande central square fills with monthly antiquarian fairs and Saracen Jousts. Heading southeast leads to healing spa treatments at Rapolano Terme or, therapy of another sort, the designer shops of the Valdichiana Outlet Village.

But the Chianti region is practically on Cacciatore’s doorsteps with Castelnuovo Berardenga, Villa a Sesta and San Gusmé all offering stellar restaurants, excellent wineries and stately villas. Not surprisingly, the rural castle of Baron Ricasoli, the creator of the ‘recipe’ of Chianti wine, is also located is this area. It is a region which deserves to be discovered at leisure, with excursions interwoven into sunny days of relaxation and the comfort of one’s own Tuscan villa.
