On a gentle hill in some of the loveliest countryside of Tuscany, the ancient, aristocratic winery in the little village of Lornano has been in the same family for generations. Three houses are arranged round an old threshing floor, like the piazza of a hamlet. They all have plenty of space and height. Much of the furniture is antique, cleverly co-ordinated with good quality Tuscan furniture in excellent taste. The large pool, about 50 metres beyond the houses, has a wide, furnished surround and shares in the beautiful views of the Chianti countryside, framed with flowers, herbs and shrubs attracting a myriad of butterflies.
The front door opens from the flower-filled piazza into a lovely, beam ceilinged entry with a wide brick arch separating the kitchen from the sitting room. On one side is an open fireplace and, in a spacious kitchen, a dining table that opens to twice its size; on the other, the sitting room furniture is enhanced by wicker seating, a small sofa, an unusual red lacquered Tuscan chest of drawers and an arched window. Stairs from the centre of this room lead to the first floor, which has a bathroom, a twin bedroom, and a double bedroom with a private, small terrace looking onto the owners' garden. Guests have a reserved spot on the lovely piazza near their front door entrance for outdoor meals.
On occasions when guests would like to rent Canaiolo along with Trebbiano (Ref. 149) there is a door in the sitting room which interconnects to the large Trebbiano bedroom.
The owners at the villa have their own, private parts of the grounds and parklands, and may occasionally use the pool. Guests have their own parking space and entrance, separate from the owners' villa. While you enjoy your holiday, 100 meters away exquisite wines are slowly moving and maturing in oak casks in the ancient cellars below the villa, lovingly tended just as they have been for centuries past. A visit to the cellars is a wonderful way of cooling off, for the natural temperature there varies between 12 degrees in winter and 18 degrees in the high summer, all brought about by the construction of the ancient cellars themselves. Touring from Lornano is a constant delight along picturesque roads. These three houses are sufficiently private for separate renting, while if taken by a group, there is plenty of space for everyone to meet together.

CalendarExceptionally hot weather (and a bottle of the locally produced Chianti Classico) greeted us at Lornano; the welcoming pool was just the thing for cooling down. In fact the pool and the surrounding gardens were the best part of the holiday. Angelitta (the site manager) was very helpful; the bedding and towels were changed mid-holiday. The winery tour and tasting was very enjoyable. Canaiolo was historic with lovely features but in need of a comfy sofa and better mattresses. The patio chairs would of benefitted from cushions. Fly screens and fans would of been an advantage. Great base for visiting the local countryside and towns and having beautiful Sienna on your doorstep was a huge plus.

Comfy sofa! We've mentioned this to the owners before and will mention it again now - we do agree. Fly screens and fans can be arranged - in fact the upstairs rooms have screens, if I remember correctly. It's the large double doors that, though wonderful, are tricky to protect from flying things. Glad you enjoyed it overall and thanks for the notes - we will act upon them.
We had the most wonderful week. Was a stunning place for the kids and adults to stay and relax. We had the most wonderful week. Was a stunning place for the kids and adults to stay and relax.
Exactly what we expected, and a little more. We really enjoyed our stay. Canaiolo is so ideally situated...close to all the places worth visiting. And the scenery...absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. The only problem we initially had was to find the place, directions could be a bit more specific, especially for foreigners. Thank you so much for contributing to a wonderful holiday in Italy.
Stayed in Mid June, so before mosquitos were a problem. Larger property than expected with a great restaurant within walking distance. Close to Sienna and Chianti estates. Comfortable, spacious and clean accommodation and great pool if still a little cool in June. Would thoroughly recommend the place to anyone who is thinking of visiting the area.
Canaiolo is in a fine location, overlooking a valley but with easy access to the main Siena - Florence road. The grounds and the pool are the best things about it - they are idyllic. The house is simply furnished but spacious, although the bedrooms get hot (we were there in a heatwave). Having a helpful caretaker on site was a bonus.
