  • This large Umbrian house is the heart of this charming little hamlet, standing fair and square in the middle of the grouping of houses. Casa Antica is actually the top two floors of this large building and opens on to the square, while the lower floor is the "La Terrazza" apartment,. A short walk up the hill the large swimming pool is shared with the other apartments in the hamlet. The views from here are beautiful and the house is good taken on its own or as the main building for a large family reunion, taking the whole Borgo - aptly called "Il Borgo".

Entered from the central piazza of the Borgo, a wooden door leads into the entry corridor off of which is a bathroom with separate shower. The corridor ends in the large country kitchen with and open fireplace and corner sofa, a large dining table for 8 and side pantry with a marble-topped table and refrigerator. Off of the kitchen a short hallway leads to two bedrooms, a large double bedroom with a corner fireplace and independent access to the piazza and a smaller double bedroom that has a charming ensuite shower room.

A stairway off the front entrance leads up to a living room with sofas in front of an open fireplace and a French door to a small furnished balcony that looks on to the olive groves and wooded hillsides that frame the valley below. Also off the living area is a door to a large bathroom with both tub and shower facilities, which is also accessed by the double bedroom. Also on this floor is a twin/double bedroom with an old-fashioned wood heater. The furnishings throughout the house feature good-quality country antiques, good linens and soft fabrics as well as the expected touches of terracotta and marble. In the central piazza near the entrance a marble-topped table provides guests with an al fresco option for group meals.

    Local area

Tucked into the folds of a wooded hillside and gazing down at a village that has weathered more than six centuries, one might be tempted to let the world slide by. But there are good reasons to venture out, even if only to visit the beautiful Romanesque Abbey of S. Savatore, which just happens to sell wine and olive oil and house a popular restaurant. Shops, restaurants and all amenities are within 1/2 hr. in the ancient market town of Umbertide or in the medieval walled village of Montone, the latter famed as the home of Braccio da Montone, one of Italy’s most audacious 'condottieri', or mercenaries. Perugia, the capital city of the region and a lively university town, may have a history that dates back to the Etruscan Iron Age, but it is modern host to the Umbria Jazz Festival in July and the Eurochocolate Festival in October.

Other Umbrian towns, Gubbio, Spello, Todi, Spoleto or St. Francis' Assisi, or Tusan favorites Arezzo and Siena, are also within reach and celebrate everything from truffles to crayfish, a swift horse or a good bottle of wine, at times in full costume. When muscles want stretching, there are tennis courts and golf courses in the vicinity and, only 40 minutes away, Lago Trasimeno, Italy's 4th largest lake, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and ancient castles and offering sailing, fishing and sandy beaches. For those for whom shopping is a delight, there are weekly village markets, the nearby town of Deruta, a haven of Tuscany's famed colourful ceramics, and the large Valdichiana Outlet Village, awash in designer brands. Yet with Penny's roses to smell, a borrowed dog to walk, a cooling pool and cocktail hour on the horizon, certain hours may be spent closer to home.
