Casa Carina 4

Romantic Cottage for 4 with Private Pool : Todi, Umbria

Nice little touches

  • This is a real place to getway from it all, with privacy and beautiful views

Good to know

  • The final part of the road leading to the house is, in some parts, very steep. First gear driving and a car with front wheel transmission is recommended.

On a historic estate near Todi, the owner has converted some of his old farmhouses and equipped them with pools. This is a small, charming Villa for 4 which would also be good as a honeymoon spot for two, tucked away in the Umbrian hills yet still close enough to Todi and Orvieto for some great exploring.

Accommodation

The main entry to the house is from the furnished patio, shaded by a vine-draped pergola and ideal for meals al fresco. A wide door leads into a living / dining room with a dining table for 6 and sofas set facing a stone-clad open fireplace. Adjacent to the dining area is an attractive galley kitchen dressed in brick, tiles and warm woodwork. Two ensuite bedrooms, a double and a twin, are accessed off the living room, each with its own access to the surrounding lawn. To take advantage of the best possible view, an additional flagstone patio is located on the hill rising behind the house. The patio includes a pergola with a table for 4, sun beds and an above-ground pool suitable more for refreshing meditation than exercise.

“ A True Umbrian Escape ”

Casa Carina is a smaller villa full of rustic charm, located well off the beaten track. We had a super week here, surrounded by the sights and sounds of unspoiled nature - in particular there were lots of butterflies. The pool was ideal, very refreshing on a hot day and the villa had pleasant outdoor spaces to relax and unwind, along with pretty walks on the doorstep. There was ample room for the four of us (good to have the two en-suite bathrooms) and we experienced it all in some of the best and worst weather. We were glad we to have a pack of cards and decent TV with Casting option when the rain was pouring down and the wind was howling!

Mario was an excellent host, always responsive and able to offer help and advice as required. We were very grateful to have a selection of wine and groceries waiting for us on our arrival after a long day of travelling. The kitchen could have been slightly better equipped but it was adequate for our needs. We cooked a few meals ourselves and also enjoyed eating out at a couple of excellent local restaurants (Osteria La Cruccola in Acqualoreto and Kairos in Izzalini).

We made trips to Todi (the nearest town), Assisi, Orvieto and Florence (a long but brilliant day). The duomo in Orvieto was particularly awe-inspiring! We visited Trebotti organic winery on our return from Orvieto for a fascinating tour and tasting experience. Definitely recommend!

Do heed the advice regarding the track to the villa - it has some extremely steep gradients to negotiate which are not for the faint hearted! A 4x4 would cope fine (would definitely recommend), but if you have a front wheel drive hatchback like we did then you might want to disable the traction control when you leave the main road. We got used to it though and it's worth the effort for the view when you get there - all part of the adventure!

Around Casa Carina

As this lovely house is on a fenced estate you can safely bring pets, and explore the surrounding woods and meadows on wonderful walks. Once you venture off the estate, however, there are many interesting outings available. Todi and Orvieto were on the important trade and pilgrim routes towards Rome. As a consequence, this area excels in important sculpture, architecture and paintings, including of course Orvieto's wonderful cathedral, whose facade, like a triptych with the dazzling Technicolor hues of its mosaics and richly beautiful sculptural detail, has earned it the nickname of the "Golden Lily of Cathedrals". This area is famous for its food and wine, and one of Italy's most famous, (and most expensive) restaurants, Vissani, is very near by, at Baschi on Lake Corbara. There are masses of excellent restaurants everywhere and numerous wine cellars where you can try Orvieto's excellent wines and eat in the outdoor estate restaurant. Even better, you can arrange for an excellent cook to come to the house. A wonderful place to stay and indulge yourself in a surfeit of views, art, food, wine and, above all, peace, the farmhouse is a perfect foundation for a memorable holiday.

Worth knowing

Many local administrations now charge a “Tourist Tax” for people staying in rented accommodation and these vary from town to town.
