On the hillside of a fertile wooded valley where locals once brought their olives to mill, Casa Umbra is a restored stone house. The steep approach to the villa requires a bit of 1st gear driving, but the reward is well worth it; the view over olive groves, oak woods and distant villages allows you to feel that the world is as it should be and you are on top of it. Restored in golden local stone, the house retains the feel of its Umbrian country heritage, yet offers every comfort a modern guest might wish for.
There are many entrances to the house, all with inviting reasons to choose them. The paved covered patio furnished for outside dining and the incredible valley view leads either into a sitting room with a brick fireplace and comfortable sofas or into a dining room with a refectory table for 12. Off the sitting room are a shower room and a spacious king double bedroom with en-suite bathroom. Beyond the dining room is a fully equipped eat-in kitchen with double doors out to a patio and pizza oven. A twin bedroom with ensuite bathroom and a queen double bedroom with ensuite shower room on the upper floor can be reached either by the internal staircase in the dining room or by doors off the poolside patio, which is furnished for outdoor dining or watching the children at play in the large pool nearby.
Great attention has been paid to materials and furnishings; beamed ceilings, terracotta floors, good kitchen and bathroom fittings and country antiques find an easy harmony. Behind the house there is a BBQ, which makes gathering poolside for an evening meal and a view of sunset all the more natural.
As this lovely house is on a fenced estate you can safely bring pets, and explore the surrounding woods and meadows on wonderful walks. Once you venture off the estate, however, there are many interesting outings available. Todi and Orvieto were on the important trade and pilgrim routes towards Rome. As a consequence, this area excels in important sculpture, architecture and paintings, including of course Orvieto's wonderful cathedral, whose facade, like a triptych with the dazzling Technicolor hues of its mosaics and richly beautiful sculptural detail, has earned it the nickname of the "Golden Lily of Cathedrals". This area is famous for its food and wine, and one of Italy's most famous, (and most expensive) restaurants, Vissani, is very near by, at Baschi on Lake Corbara. There are masses of excellent restaurants everywhere and numerous wine cellars where you can try Orvieto's excellent wines and eat in the outdoor estate restaurant. Even better, you can arrange for an excellent cook to come to the house.
A wonderful place to stay and indulge yourself in a surfeit of views, art, food, wine and, above all, peace, the farmhouse is a perfect foundation for a memorable holiday.
You will need to take care with the road leading to the accommodation as it can be steep and narrow in parts. But the villa is in an enviable location with excellent views of the surrounding hills and villages. We had a very relaxing stay. The kitchen is excellent, well equipped and very convenient for cooking. Bedroom very comfortable. The swimming pool is wonderful, with good sun-beds, and we liked very much the hammocks on the lawn at the front of the villa. There are a number of places outside to eat, so you can choose depending upon the time of day. Mario is a very welcoming, helpful and generous host, always available but also very conscious for the privacy of the guests.
Located on a remote hill with a stunning view of the breathtaking landscape of Umbria, the Casa Umbra is the perfect hideaway in Italy's heartland. The elegant and luxurious residence is fully equipped with everything one needs for a perfect vacation. One can relax by the pool or read in one of the hammocks overlooking the hillside. The three bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms are spacious and provide perfect privacy even when sharing the house. The kitchen is fully equipped and even though one is fully surrounded by nature there is a fast internet connection, a TV and telephone. While it could be easy to loose oneself in the serenity of the place and just never leave the villa, one is still very close to the gems of Italian art and culture. Beautiful must see towns such as Todi, Orvieto, Perugia, and Assisi are just a short drive away and offer fantastic dining and outstanding cultural experiences. Me and my family would have loved to stay the whole summer and hope to come back soon.
Time at this Villa is simply remarkable. The food, the staff, the hospitality, the comfort and the view are simply unmatched
One of the most beautiful places in the world! Peaceful surrounding, ideally arranged villa with exceptionally good taste, never ending visual and physical pleasure. To come back and experience again and again
A marvellously tranquil part of Umbria, and a great house high on a hill. I have spent happy days there, and highly recommend it. Day trips to great places are to be found in every direction. I only hesitate to recommend it because I want to keep it to myself!
