Il Casale is a beautifully converted, rambling Tuscan farmhouse in the Montagnola hills west of Siena. Sufficiently high to take advantage of the wonderful views of this historic area, yet set just below the crest of the hills, it is snugly settled into its 3 hectares of grounds, gently perfumed by lavender, antique roses, wisteria and herbs, and protected within a boundary of cypresses and Holm oaks. On the first terrace behind the house, the large pool has a wide, furnished terrace, shaded at one end by a pergola. From here you can enjoy the varied sunsets and survey places such as Volterra, pick out traces of ancient pilgrim and commercial routes crossing the hills on their way to Siena; or just purr with pleasure as you unwind from stressful cities.
A large furnished terrace with pergola at one end offering shade is ideal for dining outside or just sitting to enjoy a drink while watching the sunset. A glass door leads into an elegant dining room and another door leads into the farmhouse kitchen with original fireplace. Off the kitchen is a large storeroom or pantry with fridge and freezer. From the kitchen a stone staircase leads to a studio, from where a wooden step-ladder leads to a gallery bedroom with twin beds. On one side of the studio is a shower room that serves the twin/double bedroom on this level. A few steps down from the studio is a large, comfortable sitting room with a fireplace and beyond this room, the master double bedroom with a large ensuite bathroom.
With an independent entrance on the other side of the house on two levels, there is a charming twin/double bedroom, a shower room and a small kitchen living room with two hobs, a sink and small fridge.
You will be welcomed on arrival by an English-speaking friend of the owner who will show you the property and give advice, if needed, on restaurants to visit, etc. The owner has left books, brochures and cards for visits, restaurants and other services to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. This house is the private joy of its owner, and its conversion and furnishings express her delight and care, with beautifully conserved original features enhanced by treasures collected over many years. It is also child friendly, due to frequent visits by children and grandchildren.
A happy house, ideally situated both for relaxing in the glorious and fascinating Montagnola countryside, and benefiting from the vicinity of Siena, San Gimignano and Florence. Il Casale is situated a couple of kilometres beyond the famous hotel Relais La Suvera and its restaurant, along a good unmade country lane. Just below La Suvera is the historic village of Pievescola, with a Romanesque church, a bar/shop and other restaurants. Pievescola holds a Sagra del Fungo festival each September, celebrating the enormous quantities of Porcini mushrooms found in the woods.
One last e-mail to say thank you for helping me organise a wonderful holiday last week. Everything was perfect including Anna's meals...she is a lovely person and very patient as the Palio was delayed over a hour!
I hope to use Invitation to Tuscany again very soon.
I wanted to reply to you firstly to say thank you so much for all your help, in booking Casale, and your kind consideration when we had to cancel the first time. Have just come back from an idyllic break at Casale. Lovely grounds, simply the best swimming pool we have had in a villa holiday. Also the most comfortable bed we have slept in. Decent well equipped kitchen, the lay out of the house made it easy even with 6 adults to find space, we never felt we were on top of each other. Plenty of seating outside as well. We had a 16 month toddler who had never really encountered stairs before, and needed close supervision as there are quite a few stairs inside and outside. It had everything we could have wanted, including an excellent wi-fi connection. The owner and the local agent were extremely helpful, and both were English speaking. The white road to the property is not the easiest, but I could manage in a Mercedes Viano! Would go back tomorrow. The views from the pool and the seat further up the garden are spectacular, especially at sunset.
We had a wonderful time, I have to say I shed a tear on leaving, it was just the perfect place to stay. The directions were superb, and quite frankly the best we have had from anyone. I appreciate the recommendation not to use GPS, but this only really applies from Pievescola onwards. We had a lovely drive to and from Pisa via Volterra and Pontedera which we would never have found without firstly Emily's advice and subsequent use of GPS. Really much prettier than the superstrada, which wasn't very super at all!
Would highly recommend the Ristoranta all Pieve, in Pievescola. They also do cookery lessons, and twice a week this includes a visit to the market with the chef as well. Il Astronave was also a good place to eat. On the scenic route from Pisa airport there is an excellent Conad supermarket in Capannoli, which was far superior to the co- op in Poggibonsi or Simply in Colle di Val D'Elsa.
Would definitely go back to Casale again, though my children are asking if there is a similar sized villa that is closer to an airport and closer to nearby town.
Once again thank you, I have recommended you to friends already.
Thank you so much, we had a splendid vacation at Casale.
It is a wonderful place in a perfect location, close to all the places we wanted to visit and also private and secluded, which suited us perfectly. It is nice to be staying in a place that is clearly a home and not just a rental property. It was well equipped and we benefited from the pool, washing machine and sports equipment. I am a cook so we enjoyed creating feasts in the kitchen. I would really have to dig to come up with anything to improve, and the only thing I can think of is that the knives in the kitchen are blunt and there's no sharpener.
We had a lovely week at Il Casale and spent it relaxing by the pool with a few evening excursions once it was a bit cooler. We loved Siena and Moteriggioni best of all and had a great meal out at both. In Siena we opted for the Taverna listed in the house information sheets and took pot luck at Monteriggioni. We found the Co- op a bit hard to find on our first day but went on to Poggibonsi in the end. The pool was super and a great size for proper swimming. It was so peaceful being tucked away from everything. Our only regret was not being able to speak Italian! Would definitely recommend it to friends.
A very well judged and tasteful conversion of a small group of farm dwellings set within a discretely located estate on a hillside with stunning distance views of the south Tuscan landscape. A large pool located above the property is a delight to swim in. Sunny terraces surround the property. Elegant and comfortable furniture (some period) within, lovely oriental rugs and carefully selected ornaments give the place a home from home lived-in feel. The garden is lovely, with sweeping lawns down to the woodland edge and clear evidence of care and attention to planting design around terrace areas.
