1 twin bedroom and 3 double bedrooms, 2 ensuite bathrooms and 2 shower rooms, 1 of which ensuite.
Location: Siena and surroundings
This property rents from Friday to Friday
Nestled at the base of a hillside not far from Siena, this villa is a tribute to relaxed well-being. In this former ancient stone quarry, nurtured greenery has reclaimed a rock face and offices have become a sprawling home whose comfortable rooms all access its gracious gardens. The striking juxtaposition of stone and foliage is present throughout the property - from the pool encircled by rock walls and shady holm oaks to the gracious wisteria arbour which outlines the perimeter of the quarry to the wide flagstone paths and patios edged by fragrant lavender and rosemary. This mix can only help one relax in the natural beauty of this corner of Tuscany.
The house is approached via wide furnished patios facing the olive grove and the main entrance through wide French doors leads into a bright living / dining room with hardwood floors, an open fireplace and a dining table for 6. Steps down from the dining area lead to a very large country kitchen where marble counters and a stone-hewn sink mix well with professional equipment. From the kitchen there is direct access to the long shaded pergola furnished with a circular table for 10 as well as sofas where the friends can gather for a pre-dinner cocktail or conversation long into the night. Across the walkway to the pool picnic tables under large umbrellas offer another option for an informal lunch.
There are bedrooms on various levels of the house, two of them on the ground floor off the hallway from the living area. One is a modest twin bedroom, which uses the shower room across the hallway and the other a large master double bedroom, with a corner fireplace, direct access to the front patio and an ensuite two chambered bathroom. From the front patio two external staircases lead up to independent double bedroom suites, one with an ensuite bathroom, the other with a shower room. The arrangement of the sleeping accommodations make this the ideal choice for extended family holidays where different generations can retreat to private quarters yet still meet in large common areas.
This charming property underwent a significant renovation in the autumn of 2014, which brought marble or hardwood floors to bathrooms and bedrooms and beautiful new linens and draperies throughout. With a high standard of furnishings in the house and experienced personnel to assist with requested extras, this is a place you may feel discreetly pampered.
This is great walking and biking country and once out of the property gates there is easy access to country roads that meander up to ancient castles or down to the River Merse. In the nearby village of Orgia the Museum of the Woods reveals how local woodsmen once made their living in the green hills that are still a haven for chestnut or mushroom gatherers. Yet there are good connections to medieval Siena, renaissance Florence and the crystal waters of the southern Tuscan coast. With easily arranged catering and transport, this Tuscan retreat can pamper and fascinate, and leave you with memories that linger.
Our holidays at Cava di Calbello have been a full success! All the family members were sad when we had to leave and we have already decided that we want to spend our summer holidays in Tuscany again. The reception by Caterina was warm and very friendly and helpful, the goodies waiting for us a real surprise and the attention of the caretaker during our stay very thorough and professional and JoAnn from your Italian office was just continuing the friendly and helpful service of your office. Alltogether we very much felt at home at Cava di Calbello, everyone was happy and the visits to Siena, Florence, Niki de Saint Phalle, etc. were exciting. Thank you for your kind and professional help with booking our Tuscany Holidays which from the beginning gave us a comfortable feeling of being thoroughy supported.
I recently stayed at this beautiful property with my family, and it could not have been any more perfect! It's a wonderful farm house in the country that's quite secluded - but also a quick drive to Siena, Montalcino, Montepulciano, etc. We love to cook, and the kitchen was extremely well-equipped with pots, pans, bowls, and every accessory and utensil you could think of. It was a bit cold the first week in October, but we were able to build a fire each night, which was very warm & cozy. The wireless internet worked very well for us american workaholics. There was also plenty of space and bedrooms, and the property manager/housekeeper made us feel right at home & were just a quick phone call away if we needed them. They even welcomed us with a lovely spread of fruit, bread, cheese & meats, and of course, Chianti. Would highly recommend this property to anyone, and we can't wait to return!
Just a quick note to let you know that Cava di Calbello has exceeded our expectations. Licio couldn't have been more helpful and Karla served a wonderful meal.
We had a wonderful time and the villa lived up to our expectations. We loved the privacy of the villa, the understated beauty of the gardens and the room layout. The kitchen was particularly well equipped and functional. We thought that Licio and Karla were most helpful and friendly.
We ate at the Cateni restaurant in Orgia and thought it was a good representation of rural, Tuscan cuisine. The staff there was particularly warm and welcoming. Some local recommendations for things to do would include the Tenuta di Trecciano winery just above Sovicille and the bottega of local products in Stigliano.
We would offer the following suggestions to improve the experience at Cava di Calbello:
- It would be helpful to have better instructions (in English) regarding the use of the washer, dryer, oven and jacuzzi tub in the master suite (indeed, we couldn't figure out how to turn it on or whether it was just no longer functioning).
- It would be helpful to repair the screens on various doors including the two upstairs bedroom suites and the parlor. We were unable to leave these doors open as the screens no longer worked. The two door screens in the master suite, while functional, also need attention.
Finally, we were very impressed by the ITT staff, organization and assistance throughout every step of the process. You were professional, friendly and helpful at every turn and contributed to the success of our stay.
We are currently in our 3rd week here. We are absolutely delighted. The property wasn't our first choice as we had intended to stay at Casole d'Elsa where we have rented twice before. But we are glad that the property was recommended to us. It lies below the village of Orgia, location of Restaurant Cateni, which in itself is worth the visit. The house is located in massive gardens all of which are well maintained. The house has 4 double bedrooms, and a small single. The confusion of old quarry buildings is outstanding and reflects attention to detail and a fine design. The kitchen is first class with, for example, twin Miele dishwashers and a professional Ilve range. It is located about 2kms down a farm track, and is totally isolated. The gardens have multiple vine covered pergolas, and the pool has a lovely covered gazebo. The outside living area which is fully roofed is lovely. The property would ideally suit an extended family or 4 couples. You wake to the sound of...bees...and the smell of lavender, rosemary, thyme and Jasmine. Just a wonderful home. We'd return in a heartbeat.
Hidden away in the most peaceful of locations with outstanding gardens and grounds we found this house to be just pure bliss. Visiting the area for the first time we were delighted by the local villages, proximity to Siena, and the quality of the fixtures and fitting this house provided. From the most comfortable of beds with the finest linens to the amazing kitchen fitted to professional standard we loved every minute. The house is perfect for several couples or as in our case, two couples and a single adult, with two external bedrooms there is a high degree of privacy. Sadly the weather during our stay was dreadful so we were not able to enjoy the pool which looked delightful. We can only thank our future daughter in law for finding this gem and the owner for providing such a perfect retreat.
