Location: Siena and surroundings

In a secluded group of Liberty houses, Costafabbri is a beautifully appointed apartment in a stylish villa overlooking a wooded valley bordering Siena. The clean lines of the stucco and brick facade of the villa and the charm of the wrought-iron well in the wide brick piazza immediately hint at the modern comfort and touch of whimsy that guests will find inside. Entrance to the first floor apartment is off a furnished flagstone patio, planted with roses and flowering shrubs and exclusively used by Costafabbri guests, and up a short staircase shared by the Italian resident of the back apartment.
The recent renovation of the apartment was in the hands of the talented owner-architect and her eye for detail is seen everywhere. Fine bleached timber floors, travertine stairs, and lovely antique furniture complement a modern simplicity that gives the apartment an immediate sense of peace the moment you walk through the door. The living room is furnished with comfortable sofas and sits under the watchful eye of frescoed moon goddess on the ceiling above. Off the adjacent dining room with an oak table for 6 is a large well-equipped kitchen, whose sparkling white counters and cabinets and marble-topped wooden table make it a lovely place in which to have breakfast or delve into Tuscan cooking where excellent ingredients are so close to hand. Also off the dining room is a large double bedroom with views to the front piazza and to the side gardens. As in all bedrooms, there is sturdy antique furniture and plump pillows dressed in fine linens. A few steps up from the dining room is a second double bedroom under a low white beamed ceiling, a shower room and a large bathroom divided to include both a shower and a elongated oval bathtub, set perfectly to enjoy the view of the valley below. A travertine-clad staircase in the dining room leads up to the third and largest bedroom located in the former dovecote. With high circular or arched windows on all sides (and curtains to mitigate the sun and moonlight), a towering beamed ceiling and its beautifully worn terracotta floor, this room will be a delight to wake up in.
While the owners occupy the lower floors of the large villa that has been in their family for nearly a century, they are discreet and very knowledgeable of the area, and can be of great help suggesting activities to round out a Tuscan vacation. Whether it's riding through the Tuscan landscape or finding roads that lead to thermals baths, Chianti wineries, or the well-known cities of art, La Costafabbri is well situated to reach it all. Closer to home, this is an excellent place for easy walking, and there are paths through olive and walnut groves around the villa or roads down to one of the best delicatessens in the area. And, of course, there is that magnificent medieval city that sits just on the horizon. Known best perhaps for its beautiful shell-shaped piazza and its historic Palio horse race, the winding narrow streets and architecture of another age make Siena the place for holiday memories to be made.
We loved our time at Villa Costafabbri. Daniella and Mario were gracious and welcoming the whole time we were there. Beautiful surroundings both inside and out. It was PERFECT! Thanks again for all your assistance in helping to make our time in Siena and the surrounding area so special. It was one of the top highlights of our five week trek through Italy.
This is the perfect house. We have used Invitation to Tuscany for 28 or so years and have enjoyed all our experiences with them but this beautiful, tasteful architect conversion exceeds all your expectations. You can eat decent, honest food 5 minutes walk down the hill if you cannot be bothered to cook but the supermarket deli counters are a joy anyway. The ice cream in the gelateria in San Rocco a Pilli is to die for and the food in Buon Sapore was lovely. The restaurant in Orgia, an old favourite, afforded us an excellent Sunday lunch but the culinary prize for us was Maceo and Diva just through the arch at the foot of the main street in Montepulciano. We still love Da Mario in Buon Convento and were pleased to hear that la nonna is still going strong. Ceci opposite the pinacotecca in Siena served delicious lamb chops and the gallery itself is a must and never crowded. Love the Lorenzettis and the Pietro do Sanos. If you want to see the most exquisite cloister in Tuscany then do not miss Torri near Rosia. It is only open 2 mornings a week. A tiny gem. We also love Monte Oliveto and San Galgano,Pienza and Montalcino and just driving through the Crete.
Daniela, the owner of Costafabbri, is a wonderfully warm and welcoming person. Her fig tart was also an unfogettable culinary experience!
Altogether this was a wonderful holiday.
About the villa - the location is perfect, as you don't need the car unless for travelling to other towns, the bus takes you to Siena exactly in 10 minutes. The villa itself is really really nice and comfortable. It is ideal for a longer stay, as well as for a stay with a little child. It was very warm inside. The internet connection was sometimes too weak for international calls, but good enough to get the work done. The owners are very nice and relaxed, you can feel that this rent is not their primary occupation and concern, and this is good. So we are really happy about the journey. Thank you very much indeed.
Costafabbri was the perfect setting for our tour of Tuscany! It was centrally located in the Tuscan region with fabulous sights only a short drive away. After getting a bit lost finding the property (our only word of caution), we were cheerfully greeted by our hostess and shown around. Our apartment was a second and third floor spacious unit in a grand villa. The accommodations were beautiful - just as the photos appeared on the website! The views out our window high on a hill overlooking Siena were amazing! Everything was so clean, comfortable and well cared for! There were basic food supplies in the fully equipped kitchen and even wine to relax with after our long drive from Rome. The furnishings were very comfortable and we truly had everything we needed for our stay. There was wifi internet service, which was helpful as well. The gardens around the villa were beautiful too, and we wish we had more time to spend exploring the grounds. We would highly recommend this property to others and hope to stay there again one day.
Wonderful small community of traditional homes just a valley away from Siena. Owners are busy but delightful; Mario tends his "farm" from sunrise to dark. I chose Costafabbri from the online photos which featured the large kitchen (it is!) and noticed the fine bed linens (they are). Other same $ choices seemed "dark" and of less quality compared to La Caprera. Just a short walk to local bus line and a wonderful small market which likely has all you would need to cook your own meals (we did!). The market owners prepare fresh pork sausages, buffalo mozzarella, ricotta, and more. No vehicle is needed if you're willing to walk, catch an easy bus, or taxi back from Siena at night. We stayed two weeks. Yes, it's an expensive two weeks comparing Euro to the Dollar right now; however, we were delightfully comfortable, had incredible self-prepared Toscana meals, enjoyed the three times a day visitations of the local women on the patio gardens below our windows, read to our hearts content, and toured Tuscany a couple times with Off the Beaten Paths Tours (recommended!). A comfortable location for 6 adults if they are couples and can share the three beds. Note: There are stairs through out the suite of rooms; not a location for bad knees or walking disabilities as even the baths and laundry are up steps from any of the other rooms. Views from every window and a great patio garden just for this rental. We'll come again if we save the $$. The owner's daughter is likely a type "A" and was a bit controlling about our arrival. We never met her as she lives in London. Her parents, the owners, are onsite and very relaxed, helpful, and easy going. We were on our own and had great privacy at all times. We enjoyed the excitement and community outpouring that played out after my daughter discovered (heard) a cat in the cistern well...the gato was rescued successfully after a three hour play-out of ideas and attempts including a very dedicated fire department. Loved it!
Elegance abounds; Costafabbri is chic, stylish and as well as a winner with our guests, it is a winner with us. We loved the cool muted shades of the interior that infuse the house with a sense of calm. We travelled into Siena on the local bus to see how easy it was - and easy it was! Siena is a wonder of a city and Costafabbria is the place to stay if you want to be close to its attractions, take in the unrivalled atmosphere of the busy streets, fabulous restaurants and the buzz of the world famous Piazza del Campo with just a short taxi ride home.
