Docciole 8 to 12

Large Chianti Villa and Pool close to Village : Radda in Chianti, Siena, Italy

Nice little touches

  • The house is a wonderful place for family holidays: large and rambling with enough space for everybody to get together, and then a little more for time alone.
  • Having the village within walking distance makes for a relaxing and car-free holiday.

Good to know

  • There is a lake on the property, at the bottom of the enormous garden.
  • The owners have 2 small dogs that live at the owner's home, but may wander over to visit.

This large restored farmhouse in Chianti is the perfect spot for a family reunion, with a swimming pool, spacious grounds, table-tennis and a village within walking distance.

Converted by the owners to accommodate visits from their large family, the top floor is designed for communal living, while three apartments on the ground floor provide a little privacy when needed. Everyone can congregate upstairs in the enormous living room or outdoors under the pergola and dining table by the pool, but if you'd like a little quiet time just retreat to your own apartment and re-join the fray when you've charged your batteries.

Radda in Chianti is only a short walk away, around 1km or 15 min, with restaurants, cafes and excellent wineries.

This Chianti Villa can be rented for 12 or, at lower prices, for 10 or for 8. The apartments that aren't required are always left empty: whether you book for 8 guests or 12 the entire house and pool are private to your group.

Between the house and the pool, a large pergola provides the perfect spot for al-fresco dining, relaxing and reading. There is an simple outdoor kitchen and a wonderful, "Heath Robinson" clockwork barbecue. The owners live nearby and Luciano will be more than happy to show you how to use it and point you at the best butcher in the local town of Radda. You can also ask for a cook to come and prepare meals for you, just ask your agent for details.

Accommodation

The main living quarters are upstairs, up the well-trodden external stone steps. Immediately through the front door one is drawn to the light flooding into the very large living-dining room to the right. With chestnut beams soaring over the dining area to double height, the sheer volume of air and light create a marvelously welcoming space. To one side of the dining table for 8 a wooden staircase rises to a mezzanine containing two single beds, while the far end of the living area has sofas set in front of an open fireplace and a doorway leading to a generous country kitchen.

Modern appliances find a harmony with a cooking fireplace, bread cupboard and long refectory table and become, in time-honored tradition, the heart of this Tuscan home. Three double bedrooms are on this floor, one off the dining area and two down a side hall past a small study. All of the bedrooms are spacious and furnished with lovely fabrics and country antiques. The two bathrooms, one ensuite and one shared, make great use of terracotta, Tuscany's much beloved material.

Further accommodations are on the ground floor - three large double bedroom suites, each with a shower room, dining table, sufficient kitchen facilities to prepare a light meal and an independent access to the outdoors. While the ground floor of the farmhouse does not have an internal staircase to the top floor, the three lower suites do interconnect, an ideal arrangement for a family unit. While the suites differ in look and layout, care has been taken to provide each with similar comforts. Apartment Tinaia, which you can see on the floorplan, is closed to guests, very occasionally used by family but is not rented out.

The garden at the back of the house, planted in fragrant, flowering shrubs and shaded by towering oaks, extends the living space. Under a vine-draped pergola there is a table large enough for everyone to sit down to meals al fresco. There is a free-standing barbecue, a pizza oven, and sun beds to set on the wide lawn overlooking a raised pool bordered on one side by a wooden deck. Additional space is also available for group activities in a charming annex across the drive from the house.

“ Ideal accommodation and facilities for a large family group of mixed ages ”

We all enjoyed our stay at Docciole immensely, There were activities for all of us to participate in and it was a delight to share in evening meals outside. It was also well equipped for people to do their own thing occasionalyl if they so wished. We had a BBQ one evening helped by Luciano .Anna was always there to advise us and recommend cafes etc We began to feel part of the family by the end of the week.

“ Wonderful stay. ”

We had a wonderful stay at Docciole. The home is spacious and fit our group of 11 comfortably. The outdoor space had beautiful views and we all enjoyed the pool on the hot days. Although there was no AC, the weather got cooler at night and so we slept comfortably. The city is a short walk from the house where there are cute shops, restaurants and cafés. Anna is a wonderful host who was always available if we needed anything and she suggested great places to visit.

“ Family holiday ”

We absolutely loved our time at Docciole. You will be welcomed by lovely Anna who’s family home it is. It is a typical Tuscan stone farmhouse with a lovely homely feeling and loads of space for living inside and out. We particularly enjoyed the outdoor kitchen under a grape vine pergola and the swimming pool surrounded by olive trees. It is exceptionally well equipped for cooking and eating Anna is a perfect host and responded to the small issues that cropped up. It is a short walk to charming Radda in Chianti with spectacular views across Tuscan countryside, some tourist shops and a useful Coop supermarket. It is perfectly situated to explore the Chianti region if you’re into wine, medieval villages or the spectacular Sienna and Florence. Can’t recommend it highly enough!

“ 3 weeks in Tuscany at the fabulous Docciole ”

I just came back from 3 weeks in Tuscany at the fabulous Docciole property in Chianti. The house is wonderful with a large family dwelling along with 4 private separate apartments. All are well furnished and all have well-equipped kitchens.

The property is beautiful, the pool and breakfast spaces grand and the owners are lovely ( Their barbecue dinner is not to be missed). I brought my large family over and we had the time of our lives. Thank you.

“ A great time with our friends at Docciole ”

We had a great time with our friends at Docciole. The house worked out well for us, it was charming, roomy and comfy. There was one day when we had some roof leaks due to rain and wind, and a pool issue due to high winds, but it was taken care of by Luciano immediately.

Luciano and Anna could not have been nicer! They put on 2 enormous feasts for us in their "atelier" and a wonderful time was had by all. Luciano was always around to answer questions, and I was happy to be able to practice my Italian, though I am sure we could have managed in English, had it been necessary.

We cooked several meals at Docciole and had no problem finding the proper kitchen gadgets & appliances. There was a filter coffee machine but it was extremely slow, so if I were to come back I would ask for a new one, I think. Other than that, everything was fine.

As far as recommendations go, we had a very nice meal (set menu for 12) at La Bottega di Volpaia. Carla did a great job of organizing our menu and overseeing our evening.

Another special place we went to was the Castello di Ama vineyard in Gaiole. We did the wine and art tour, which was led by a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. Interesting pieces, beautiful space and nice lunch too.

A special mention needs to go to Luciano and Sandra, the lovely couple who own the enoteca on the main road in Radda. They helped Luciano cook for us and were very kind whenever we popped in their store to ask a question or needed something.

We loved the Chianti region. We would love to return to Docciole with our family, probably not next year, but at some point. In any case, if the destination is Tuscany we will surely look up your agency.

Thanks for your attentive service. We appreciated it!

Around Docciole

From the vineyards at the front of the estate the view of Radda in Chianti beckons guests to a first stop and, in fact, it is only one easily walked kilometer to the closest restaurant in the village. The unofficial capital of the region and a typical Chianti Village, Radda plays host to several festivals and events throughout the summer, most, though not all, having to do with what is poured into a glass.

The closest restaurant, walkable in 1 km, is Vignale, and the Sandy Bar, which have good coffee, pastries, sandwiches and delicious gelato. For other restaurants see Good restaurants in Chianti

Nearby there are Castellina in Chianti, so prized by the Medici that they commissioned a fortress to protect it, Panzano and Greve in Chianti, whose street markets and wide piazzas are reasons for a visit and Castello di Brolio, where the standards for Chianti wine were set.

There are a lot of Chianti wineries in the areas you can visit - have a look at some of the best here: Chianti winery tours and Chianti wine-tastings.

The main cities of Tuscany like Florence, Siena and Arezzo can also be easily reached from this house.
