A respectful renovation has brought a splendid stone farmhouse dating back to 1737 gently into the 21st century and made it a visitor’s dream retreat. Set on 120 acres of olive groves, vineyards and woodlands, and a handful of minutes from the medieval villages of Castellina and Radda in Chianti, this is a superb spot in which to enjoy quintessential Chianti. With sunlit lawns and natural rocky terraces leading up to a panoramic pool, this property has both the sweeping views and the age-old materials one associates with Tuscany. Add its tasteful classic farmhouse interiors and spacious veranda and you will find it a difficult place to leave.
From the central green separating the farmhouse from its neighbor there is both a front door on the ground floor and a staircase leading up to the top floor living area. Yet nearly everyone will find themselves drawn to the entrances off the spacious covered terrace at the side of the house. Furnished with wooden sofas and a table for 10, the terrace provides both shade and a sweeping panorama. Two french doors lead into the farmhouse – one into a large well-equipped country kitchen with marble counters and a wooden table for 10, perfect for casual meals or a family cooking lesson, and another into the formal dining room whose glass-covered table for 6 sits under a wide arch. A striking feature between the dining room and the adjacent sitting room is an ancient wooden olive press. So historic is this press that upon purchase of the house the owners were contractually required to renovate around it.
The entrance hall a few steps up from the sitting room has a stairway leading to the top floor which contains a wide living room with an open fireplace, off of which are three ensuite double bedrooms and a study containing a sofa, desk and the modem which allows guests WiFi connection throughout the house. Of the bedrooms, all of which are spacious and furnished with charming country antiques, one can be set up with twin beds on prior request. There is one ensuite shower room and two ensuite bathrooms with both tub and separate shower.
Nearby there are Castellina in Chianti, so prized by the Medici that they commission a fortress to protect it, Radda in Chianti, the unofficial capital of the region, and Castello di Brolio, where the standards for the wine were set. All have excellent restaurants and enotecas, but with the possibility of having a cook at your home and a glassful on your terrace you may not see the need to wander.
