The arched front door leads into an entry hall to the right of which is a very large living area that extends the full length of the house. The room, which is divided into two sitting areas, each with sofas and armchairs, opens on one side to a wide banistered staircase that winds to the top floors. At the end of the room a doorway leads into a corridor with large double doors to the back garden and passage into a large dining room. Despite the chandelier over the dining table for 14, with its thick overhead beams, deep coral walls and open fireplace the tone is one of a Tuscan country restaurant or hunting lodge. Yet the adjoining professional kitchen is definitely modern and stainless counters and appliances shine. Equipped to produce wonderful dinners, while the marble-topped table might also be the site of an entertaining Italian cooking lesson. Doors from the kitchen lead either back to the entry hall or outside to the covered patio, furnished for meals al fresco and facing the lawn and well-tended woods beyond.

All of the bedrooms are found on the upper two floors, with three single bedrooms and a lovely shower room with twin sinks on the top floor and six double bedrooms, three of which can be set up as twins or double on request, on the first floor. With three bathrooms and three shower rooms on these floors, all but one ensuite, this house is excellent for a group of adults. Bedrooms on this floor are all spacious and furnished with lovely family antiques, while bathrooms and shower rooms feature modern design fittings and a touch of local stone.

The swimming pool behind the house is a path and short staircase away for the pool sits on a slightly lower level to the house and enjoys a panoramic view of the woods and hill of the surrounding wine estate. Wide steps into the pool lend themselves to easy entry for swimmers of all ages and the terracotta paving to one side provide space for sun beds and umbrellas that let guests decide just how much Tuscan sun is a good thing.

    Local area

Slightly over a kilometre on the country road that ends at the villa, the Santo Pietro Estate reception centre has a restaurant, bar and concierge services that can help set up anything from wine tasting to bike rental. Being in the heart of central Tuscany places many sites in your guide book at easy reach. The closest is the San Gimignano, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, famed for its medieval towers, but also offering open-air concerts seen from the steps of the church and Vernaccia, one of Tuscany's rare white wines. Just as close is Certaldo, the birthplace of home of Giovanni Boccaccio, the Renaissance author of the 'Decamero' and, in mid July, the site of one of the best street theatre festivals in Europe, the Mercantia. Only slight further afield is Volterra, the ancient Etruscan city of alabaster; with more than three millennia of history unfolding on its high plateau, it celebrates life in a series of fairs and festivals throughout the summer and honors its history in the excellent Museo Guarnacci. Both Volterra and nearby San Miniato are noted for their truffles, so always keep an eye on menus for this prized tuber. An hour's drive away is Siena, the medieval gem with the beautiful shell-shaped piazza around which the popular Palio horse race is run, or Vinci, the natal town of the great Leonardo with a small museum that reminds visitors of the breadth of his genius. Day trips could even include Florence, though parking headaches argue for utilizing the good local transportation and discovering the historic center on foot. Naturally, if part of the pleasure of touring is the sightseeing, the other part is having a welcoming home to return to - at Pellegrino you will have both.
