  • Florence 45 mins.

  • Coast under an hour's drive.

  • Excellent walking and biking country.
  • The owner of a large house in Casole, which has belonged to her family for several hundred years, has converted three spacious apartments for holiday accommodation. The front door on the main street opens to a staircase shared by all three apartments. Thick walls, heavy beamed ceilings, with terracotta and wood floors give beauty and quiet.

Carefully thought out to cope with the foibles of this lovely old house, which has seen few changes over the past centuries, the work has been done with pride and love, taking care to retain the inherent charms of the original building. The results are delightful- there are good quality fittings for bathrooms and kitchens, new, hand made terracotta floors in some rooms, hardwood in others. Interior stairs have specially designed wrought iron railings, and most of the bedrooms enjoy views of the quiet countryside at the rear.

    Accommodation

The Scrittore apartment is on the second floor: living room with built-in kitchen fittings, microwave oven (no dishwasher). A very tall window takes advantage of the country views. The twin bedroom with hardwood floor is suspended over the living room. There is a double bedroom, and a shower room. A few stairs lead to a sitting area with sofa, writing desk and inspiring views.

    Local area

Casole is a charming village with restaurants, grocery shops and friendly cafes. There are a series of festivals throughout the year, of which the most important is Casole's very own version of the Palio, in early July. A horse race up the hill is preceded by flag waving and festivities and culminates in a large village outdoors meal, with the local butcher working the barbecue!

Thanks to an art school run by an English sculptor, Nigel Konstam, you will often find artists ensconced with their easels in various corners of the village. The tiny local museum also has beautiful Etruscan finds from local digs, as well as the work of a local village artist from the 15th century. The views from the village go out as far as San Gimignano, with its famous towers, as well as across to the hills of Chianti in the east, and the forested hills of the National Park to the west.
