Virginia A 4

Villa for 4 in the popular Montestigliano Tuscan estate : Rosia, Siena

Nice little touches

  • The two swimming pools mean there is one that is kept quiet for reading and relaxing while the second one - further away from the houses - is for fun and frolics.
  • The estate organises Pizza evenings and other communal activities which are held in the main estate square.
  • At the heart of the Estate, the Virginia apartments are handy to both pools and the estate dining room and concierge services.

Good to know

  • Pets are welcome, but only in Mid and Low seasons and never allowed around the swimming pools
  • There are two apartments on the top floor of the large farmhouse - both share the loggia and furnished garden

Facing south down its own lawned garden and having wonderful views across to the wooded hills and cypress avenues of the estate, Casa Virginia has classic Tuscan farmhouse features, with airy rooms, terracotta tiled floors, wood- beamed ceilings and attractive farmhouse furniture.

Situated in exceptionally picturesque countryside, Montestigliano has all the characteristics of the classic Tuscan Great Estate: avenues of cypresses, vineyards, olive groves, woodlands and neat, cultivated fields. The estate buildings form a small complex with some farmhouses, the villa and agricultural buildings in a beautiful position on top of a hill, with extensive views of the surrounding countryside. Wide, sandy floored cypress lined avenues traverse the forested hills of the estate, often terminating in belvederes at the most impressive viewpoints. Through the tangled woodlands, across the cultivated plain below, one can see Siena and the Chianti hills in the distance, and there is a rare abundance of wild flowers and animals.

Accommodation

An external staircase leads up to a small loggia which makes a pleasant place for sitting out. Two front doors open off it into the apartments.

In Virginia A there is a sitting room with open fireplace and a large archway leading to an eat-in kitchen area with dishwasher. A door from the kitchen leads into a twin bedroom, while a door from the living area accesses a double bedroom and a shared shower room.

Virginia A has a shared furnished loggia and a large garden. This house is an excellent choice for two families or groups of friends, but can easily be let as separate units.

“ ...cannot recommend the estate more highly ”

I stayed here in April 2011 and cannot recommend the estate more highly. Our accommodation was a wonderful Tuscan experience - with the real feel of old Tuscany with all the modern conveniences (lack of TV being a blessing). The hospitality of the family was very generous and genuine. Francesco, the manager, was extremely helpful and had such a vast knowledge of everything local. He guided many of our adventures through the neighbouring villages and cities - explaining the must sees and dos. The entire complex is so peaceful and the scenery beautiful from almost every window. The facilities were excellent and the weekly dinner a really great way to meet fellow travellers and make new aquaintences - as well as indulging in the local fare, not to mention the beautiful different Italian wines!!!I would recommend Montestigliano to any traveller, but know any fellow Australians will really enjoy the friendliness and genuine Tuscan hospitality and beautifully renovated estate.

Around Virginia A

Some of the farmhouses and agricultural buildings on the vast Montestigliano estate have been very carefully converted into pleasing, comfortable houses and apartments.

Guests on the estate share two swimming pools, one reserved for those who want peace and quiet, the other, further from the houses, for allowing free rein to summer holiday fun. Guests at all the properties may wander at will all over the estate. Part of the lands front the River Merse, which has excellent swimming and is protected for bathers by the Sienese authorities.

The tiny village of Torri, with its famous monastery and striped cloisters is two minutes away by car, while there are pizzerie and restaurants within a few minutes' drive. A very important extra here is provided by the charming owners who will unobtrusively keep out of your way or happily go out of their way to help you, providing endless extra services if you require them, from sending faxes, arranging balloon trips, providing touring information, to translating at the doctor's.

During the summer concerts and exhibitions are often organised in the ancient granary, an extraordinary lofty space (14 X 28 m.) spanned by great arches laced with tie bars. This barn is also very suitable as studio space for art courses or conferences, and the rooms below, next to the estate offices, include a games room with billiards, TV, ping pong, a dining room, a catering kitchen and a small gift shop. The little restaurant provides delightful suppers twice a week.

Worth knowing

Many local administrations now charge a “Tourist Tax” for people staying in rented accommodation and these vary from town to town. Children are sometimes included, sometimes not and these charges should be collected by the property owners.
